Building wealth, one conversation at a time

Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the Thrive Legacy Dinner, an intimate and intentional gathering sponsored by the Nasdaq Foundation and led by Ramona Ortega, founder of WealthBuild.ai. Held in Houston, the dinner created space for something we, as Latinos, don’t talk about nearly enough: money.

What stood out most were the people. Two sisters ready to start the conversation about building generational wealth. Local business owners sharing real experiences. And demonstrating the power of collaboration, Jesse Martinez of Latino Startup Alliance worked closely with the team.

The event was also a celebration of Latino-owned businesses. From the venue—Las Perras Café and Roastery, a bold new space opening this month—to the food by Flor Y Miel, and vendors including GiGis Boutique, everything was curated with intention and love for our culture.

We need more spaces like this—where money talk isn’t taboo, and community wealth is a shared goal. If you're building something similar or just starting to think about it, I’d love to hear from you.

Let’s keep the conversation going:

Growing up in the ’80s with two working parents, Javiera Balmaceda Pascal and her younger brother Pedro Pascal often found themselves at the movie theater. The siblings, raised in Texas and California by parents who had fled Chile, found comfort in the stories they saw on the screen.    Where her brother chose to step in front of the camera, Balmaceda pursued shaping narratives instead—with a focus on Latin American storytelling.    For the past two decades, the Chilean native has helped major production companies like HBO Latin America and now Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios develop successful series and films for Hispanic and international audiences.    With each project she produces—News of a Kidnapping, Oscar-nominated Argentina, 1985, or the upcoming House of the Spirits—Balmaceda shows that there is a desire from all audiences for Latino storytelling.   That’s exactly what I loved most about my conversation with Javiera—our shared mission to elevate and champion Latino stories that are not only heartwarming and thought-provoking but also universally engaging and entertaining.
